How to play Blokus

A quick guide for first-time players. The rules below are based on the gameplay summary from Wikipedia.

Goal

Cover as much of the board as you can with your own color. The winner is the player with the best final score when nobody can place another piece.

What you start with

Each player has 21 pieces in one color. Together they include every shape made from one to five squares.

Main rules

  • Your first piece must touch your starting corner.
  • After that, every new piece must touch one of your own pieces only at a corner.
  • Your own pieces may never touch side-to-side.
  • Pieces from different colors may touch in any way.
  • If you cannot place a piece, your turns are over.
  • The game ends when nobody can place anything else.

Scoring

  • Every square left in your unused pieces counts as minus one point.
  • If you place all of your pieces, you get a 15-point bonus.
  • If your final piece is the single-square piece, you get 5 more bonus points.
  • The highest final score wins.

Helpful tip

Try to keep your corners open. In Blokus, corners are your future moves.
